recording street view imagery of the iconic gunung tahan
Recently, a few hardy Local Environmental Heroes did some tough trekking, all for the benefit of the country's forests and inhabitants. Slogging 10 days up Peninsular Malaysia's highest peak, the team toiled on an expedition by Google Malaysia with the Malaysian Nature Society (MNS) to collect imagery of Gunung Tahan for Street View, and the results are spectacular.
Capturing the whole journey from Merapoh to Kuala Tahan using the Street View Trekker, the 15-camera apparatus last seen by MNS during Paddle for Nature, its peninsula circumnavigation by kayak, the 100km-odd trail reaching 2,187m from sea level is now available for view on the Google Maps platform.
MNS Vice-President Prof Ahmad Ismail hails the cooperation with Google Malaysia as a forward step in advancing the Society's aim of conserving nature, as the imagery could help promote education on how to protect and conserve highland forests such as Gunung Tahan. The coverage, the first of Peninsular Malaysia's peaks, following Street View collection on Gunung Kinabalu, Sabah, is also special due to the iconic status of Gunung Tahan and MNS's history. Taman Negara, incorporating the mountain range and forests estimated to be 130 million years old, was gazetted in 1939, while the Malayan Nature Society was founded in 1940, making it the oldest environmental non-governmental organisation in the country. "It's not hard to imagine those who founded MNS to have played a part in the forming of the national parks system that until today protects our natural treasures," he says. |
It takes guts and plenty of baggage to complete the 100km-odd trek, and Mamat the Tapir takes the time to inspect everything
