The Malaysian Nature Society (MNS) on 21 November 2017 launched its new volunteer programme, "MNS Wildlife Defenders", at Zoo Negara Malaysia.
This initiative is hoped to increase the participation of MNS members and the public in support of conservation activities in Malaysia through volunteer activities, donations and merchandise sale.
The launch saw the participation of 30 students from local universities, who were assigned to animal keepers to provide care for the animals, including food preparation, maintenance of exhibition areas and conducting animal behaviour enrichment activities.
They also had the opportunity to engage with the Scientific Advisor for National Geographic, Pierre de Chabannes, who gave a talk on "Zoos: Partnering in Wildlife Conservation".
"We are very proud to partner with Zoo Negara for the launch of this volunteer programme and hope for a long-term partnership to conduct such events and various educational activities. MNS believe that volunteering for nature is one of the best ways to nurture a nature-loving mindset especially among the youths," said MNS Executive Director I. S. Shanmugaraj.
"As a member-based society, we look forward to conducting more nature-related volunteer activities, especially for our members. We hope the Wildlife Defenders programme will be able to inculcate a sense of love, care and ownership for Malaysia’s natural heritage as well as create awareness on the real life threats to our wildlife."
MNS welcomes everyone to become a Wildlife Defender.
